Atkins Day Break Bars, Chocolate Chip Crisp, 5 Count, 1.2-Ounce Bars

These seemed rather basic and a little artificial tasting to me. The chocolaty coating is good, but the “crisp” part is made of soy “nuggets” (soy, protein isolate, calcium carbonate, oat flour and oat fiber) and they tasted a little fake. I expected a sort of rice/granola taste, but they don’t really live up to that in flavor or texture wise.
Overall, they are okay, not quite as good as say a chewy oat/granola bar, but somewhat comparable. Personally, I don’t think they are nearly as good as the Atkins – Day Break Fruit Crumble Bars, which use tapioca starch with the soy instead of oat which makes them a little less “grainy” tasting. I guess it’s a matter of personal opinion.
I tend to miss “crunchy” more than chocolate during tightly controlled induction phases of low carb dieting so these bars are a good choice for me. They provide crunch but also just a bit of chocolate. Like all of the other chocolate snacks offered through Atkins, this one has that characteristic dark chocolate flavor that seems a bit powdery to me – must be the higher concentration of cocoa verses lower fats and refined sugars. The bar can get a bit dry, but serves its purpose extremely well. It’s rather small – especially for 140 calories, but not any smaller than any of the other varieties offered by Atkins. I also appreciate that I can have these bars during any phase of my dieting cycle.
At $1.09 per bar (full price) Amazon’s price for these is great compared to what I bought them for locally (with sales tax) at $1.27 per bar. Combine these with free shipping and no Sales tax and Amazon is the source to beat for these bars if you decide to make them a regular in your pantry.
I also really enjoy the caramel varieties that aren’t promoted as breakfast items (like the Day Break line).
These are really delicious. They have a crispy texture and a layer of dark chocolate on the bottom and some chocolate mini chips sprinkled on top. I have one most afternoons with a cup of decaf and it seems to keep me from eating everything in sight before dinner. Much better for me than sugar laden granola bars that make me hungry again in 30 mins. Amazon has a good price on these too.
This is my favorite Atkins bar of the bunch. Good levels of fiber and minimal ‘net carbs’ all while having a great taste. No chemical taste to this, taste is equivalent to carb loaded snacks. This will be my staple snack while on Atkins and I suggest you make it yours as well. I’ve tried most of the other flavors and this one seems the most appealing and gives you more a sensation of eating real food.
